As always, we hope you have had a productive and successful 2025. We hope you achieved everything you wanted in Martial Arts and other areas of your life. We wish you all the best in your aims and ambitions for 2026.

New Year; New Possibilities – Set Yourself Some 2026 Targets

2026 Target
2026 Target

January is always a time for fresh starts, renewed motivation, and the excitement of new possibilities. As we step into 2026, there’s no better moment to refocus your goals and challenge yourself in ways that build strength, confidence, and discipline. And what better way to achieve all three than getting straight back onto the mats?

This year, give yourself the aim to grow from where you are now. Remember, martial arts provides a structured yet supportive environment where progress is measurable and deeply rewarding. Set yourself the target to build on your past achievements in your practice. Look to learn new skills you’ve always wanted to acquire, improve your fitness levels even more, or surround yourself with a community of people who are striving toward similar goals.

Setting Your 2026 Training Targets

Start the year strong by setting clear, achievable goals such as:

  • Improving your fitness – Build strength, flexibility, and stamina through consistent training.

  • Mastering new techniques – Focus on a kick, form, or combination you want to improve this year.

  • Attending regularly – Whether it’s once a week or more, consistency is key to growth.

  • Building confidence and focus – Let your training time be your space to reset and recharge.

  • Attending Graduation regularly - so you can see your progression every few months, validate the effort you are putting in, and get ever closer to the goal of Black Belt (or higher).

If you are a Beginner (White through to Blue Belt), think about when you would like to move to the Intermediate Class (Green & Red Belt). It takes 6 to 8 months to complete the Beginners programme, so next year should see you move to the senior class. Decide when that is to happen!

If you are a 1st Gup, you should have had your meeting with your Instructor and be looking at setting a target date for your Dan Test. There are only two opportunities per year, so set yourself a date so that you don’t miss out!

Remember, you should always have a target. As Bruce Lee said, "A goal is not always meant to be reached; it often serves simply as something to aim at." So, what are you going to aim for in 2026?

Shoot for the stars, and you might just hit the moon!

Looking Back at 2025 - Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa

2025 has been a momentous year for our Centres. From new Masters within our centres to continued growth across all our sites, more people have started their Tang Soo Do journey. It has been a successful year for all our Centres, their Instructors, and the students.

In March, the Organisation came together at a special seminar to celebrate the promotion of ten long-serving students, each earning their 4th Dan and the rank of Master, including our very own Masters Brett Nelson and Harris Nelson.

The Seminar was the finishing point of a journey that started many years ago. It ramped up over the previous 12 months as the candidates practiced everything they had been taught over their years of training. This culminated in a two-day Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa (a test for the Masters Rank of 4th Dan Blackbelt) held the previous November. Master Parkinson, along with Master Salter and the existing Ko Dan Ja, oversaw the Promotion and the seminar. He said, “It was fabulous to see students of all ages and abilities getting to the rank of Master. This shows tremendous perseverance and commitment to the art. It also shows that training in Tang Soo Do can be a lifelong pursuit.

Master Parkinson went on to say, “It’s an inspiration to all of us, particularly to me, to see students in their 60s still training, still demonstrating, and still helping the organisation and their fellow students grow. Not only that, but we also have our youngest Master in Master Harris Nelson, who is only 23 years old. This is a fantastic achievement for anyone at such a young age.

Looking Back at 2025 - Becoming More Female-Friendly

For years, we have championed making sport (and martial arts) more accessible to groups who may struggle to access sports for various reasons. We took part in the national pilot to make sports more accessible to females, called ‘I Will If You Will,’ which eventually became the national ‘This Girl Can’ campaign.

2025 saw a significant change in the uniform policy for the whole of Family Martial Arts Centres. This change was championed by several Prestwich students, including Mrs McAtkin, Mrs Byrne, Miss Jackson, and Mrs Plummer, who sought the introduction of black trousers as part of the regular training kit. This has been seen as a positive change that now allows both male and female students from all over the Organisation to wear black trousers when they train in the Do Jang.

To keep with tradition, a full white uniform is still required by all members for all Graduations, seminars, and ceremonial events (e.g., Black Belt Tests).

Looking Back at 2025 - More Students Training with Us Than Ever Before

2025 has seen us have a record number of students in our Do Jangs. The four centres finished the year with over 750 students training in the fantastic art that is ‘Tang Soo Do,’ and a staggering 500 new students chose to start their martial arts journey with us this year.

It is fantastic to see so many students, both young and old, start, develop, and grow into the strong and confident students we see on the mats week in and week out. The growth of the Centres shows that the demand for great martial arts classes is as strong as ever. The Prestwich Centre pushed through the 400 active students mark back in May of this year. We will use this as a foundation to build on and continue this growth, making 2026 our biggest and best year yet.

Looking Back at 2025 - New Black Belts

This year, we held our two Dan Shim Sa’s (Dan Tests) in May and December. Over 150 students in the Family Martial Arts organisation earned the rank of Cho Dan (1st Dan Black Belt), including 28 students from our Centres, which is an incredible achievement. Additionally, we saw 9 students earn their Ee Dan (2nd Dan Black Belt), and Prestwich’s Mrs Carol Plummer joined the illustrious Sam Dan (3rd Dan Black Belt) club.

Next year’s dates have already been published in the Dates for your Diary section of our website. If you are a 1st Gup (Red Belt - 2 Blue Tags), you should have had your meeting with your Instructor and set your date for Black Belt Assessment (and therefore potentially to test too).

We continue with our 100% record of producing Black Belts across our Centres. There is absolutely no pressure on those who are looking to test in 2026!

Looking Back at 2025 - Awards Night Winners

Saturday 29th November saw Family Martial Arts Centre host its Annual Awards Evening at Metro’s Sport & Social Club in Stretford. Students, Instructors, and Centres are given awards to recognise their efforts and success over the past 12 months. This year's event raised over £1,200 for the organisation’s nominated charities - ‘MIND’ and ‘Epilepsy Research UK’.

Our Centres had a very successful evening this time. The Oldham Centre won the ‘Full-Time Centre of the Year’, the Middleton Centre won ‘Part-Time Centre of the Year’, Denton Centre’s Mrs Kelly won the ‘Instructor of the Year’, Mr Jowett from the Prestwich Centre won ‘Assistant Instructor of the Year’, and Middleton’s Mr Josh Kelly won the ‘Contribution to the Organisation’ Award.

Importance of Rank Advancement (Graduations)

If you have been with us for a while now, you will hear all the Instructors talk about Graduation. They give you the countdown of how many weeks are left until the next Graduation and make sure you get your form in early. But why is Graduation so important within Martial Arts?

Huge Graduation group
Huge Graduation group

Graduations are extremely important events in the Family Martial Arts Centres calendar. They are held every two months. It is a time when Tigers, Leadership, and Dan Students from all Family Martial Arts Centres across the North West come together and graduate at the same venue. Friends and family watch and support, making it a great opportunity to show everyone what we have been learning over the past couple of months in class.

At these events, students are awarded their next coloured belt and certificate. It is via these Graduations that students progress through the ranks within martial arts. Each Graduation is another step on their martial arts journey. Remember, Graduations for more junior ranked students are not a test. They are a great opportunity for reward and recognition for our newer members. In our Programmes, they don’t have to be experts to progress to the next belt. The new belt will help with confidence and motivation.

As they progress through the belt ranking structure, ‘Graduations’ transition to ‘Gradings’, which are more of a test. At this stage, our techniques need to be at a very good standard, with good stances and lots of energy and effort in everything we do. We expect every student to always do their best at every Graduation they attend. If you remember what you have been told in class and work hard, no one should have anything to worry about. Above all, enjoy the graduation experience.

All the dates for the 2026 Rank Advancements can be found in the ‘2026 Dates for your Diary’ further on in this blog.

The Importance of Partnership in Martial Arts Training

Learn from Everyone You Work With 🤔

One of the best things about our Do Jang’s is the variety of people who train here. Different belts, different backgrounds, and different strengths. There is genuinely something to learn from everyone you work and train with. For example, the person struggling with a technique might help you refine your own communication skills or understanding of how that technique works. Every single partner offers a chance to grow, not just physically, but as a person.

Here's a tip: Take time to observe how your partners do something. Notice their footwork, their focus, or how they generate power. This might help you reflect on your own technique and provide ideas for your own journey!

Pad Work: A Two-Way Street! 🎯

When you're holding the pads, the focus is on your partner, but it's an incredible workout for you, too!

  • Focus & Concentration: Holding pads requires intense focus. You need to present the target correctly, anticipate the strike, and react appropriately. This builds amazing concentration skills that translate to all other areas of your training (and life!).

  • A Great Workout: The resistance from repeated powerful strikes builds strength in your core, shoulders, and arms.

  • Timing & Distance: It helps you understand timing and distance from a different perspective, which will help improve your own skills as a martial artist.

Your main job as a pad holder: Be there for your partner. Give encouraging feedback, hold the pads correctly, and be a reliable target. Your focus helps them train better, and their focus helps you train better.

Be the Partner You Want to Train With 💪

As we get up close and personal with our partners during drills and Hol Sin Sool (Self Defence), personal hygiene is important for everyone’s comfort and safety. We want to ensure that you get sweaty in class, but it's important that you turn up to training clean and tidy, with a washed Do Bok, and your hair tied back if it's longer than collar length. It's also super important to make sure you have trimmed fingernails and toenails. This helps prevent accidental scratches or injuries to your fellow martial artists.

So in 2026, we want you all to think about being the best training partner you can be.

  • Offer encouragement: A simple "good job" or "keep going" goes a long way.

  • Listen to feedback: We all have things to improve!

  • Be reliable and safe: Hold those pads correctly, control your techniques, and look out for your partner's safety above all else.

Referral Scheme

Did you know that many of our members join following a referral from current and past students? We love it, so thank you for helping to spread the word. We really rely on our members to help promote our art and classes. You are always the best advert for our centres.

Referral Patch
Referral Patch

You can help out by telling your family and friends all about our classes and how much you enjoy your training. You can also give them one of the pass cards inviting them down to a free session, steer them to our website where they can book in for a trial class (www.northmanchesterfamilymartialarts.co.uk/book-online), or give them our details. Encourage them to give us a ring or drop us an email.

As a thank you for your help in bringing more students in, for everyone you refer who joins, you will receive your referral patch for your uniform, and we will pay for your next Graduation.

You see, the chances are that if we like you (and we love our members 😃), then we are likely to like your friends too!

How About a Tang Soo Party??

We now have a limited number of spots for Martial Arts birthday parties in 2026. Run by Master H Nelson, the parties can take place at either our Oldham or Prestwich Centres and are available for any active North Manchester student aged 10 or under.

Be quick, as there are limited days/slots available, and interest is already high. Message/WhatsApp on 07582 675068 to book your slot.

Class Times at the Four Centres

Don’t forget, we have a huge number of classes across all four Centres. Check out the online timetable for more details www.northmanchesterfamilymartialarts.co.uk/class-timetable. You can take your classes any day you like.

And remember, if you cannot make your usual classes at your usual Centre, you can always pop over to a class at one of our other Centres where you will be more than welcome.

How to Check for Key Dates & Information

We put out lots of information via our Facebook & Instagram pages. We repeat all the key announcements made in class and listed on the notice boards. The main page covers the Leadership classes at the Denton, Middleton, Oldham & Prestwich Centres. You can find it at https://www.facebook.com/FMACNorthManchester and https://www.instagram.com/nmfmac/.

Each of the Tiger classes has its own specific page:

But I don’t use social media’ we hear you cry… That’s OK. We also have an app where the main announcements are replicated. You won’t have the class updates, but you will know when it’s deadline day for Graduation.

The Facebook updates are also shown on the main landing page of the website, so you can access all of the info there too! There is a huge amount of info in the ‘Student Zone’ area of the website. Grab a coffee and have a mooch!

Finally, and we know it’s a bit old school, you can check the noticeboards in the Centres or the students can try to remember what we tell them at the end of class 🤔.

1st Gup Seminars

Every year, we hold free Seminars at our Prestwich Centre for those students approaching the time when they might be eligible to test for their Black Belt. They are a great opportunity for Oldham, Denton, Middleton, and Prestwich students to practice and perfect their Hyungs and Hol Sin Sool (Self Defence) in preparation for their forthcoming Dan Test. These sessions are open to anyone who is a 2nd Gup or above (places may be limited to higher ranks depending on numbers). Next year, they will be held in March and September. The 2026 seminars and their dates are as follows:

  • 14th March (1:30pm - 3:30pm) - Hyung Seminar

  • 21st March (1:30pm - 4:00pm) - Hol Sin Sool Seminar

  • 19th September (1:30pm - 3:30pm) - Hyung Seminar

  • 26th September (1:30pm - 4:00pm) - Hol Sin Sool Seminar

Dan Assessments & Tests

The Organisation holds two Dan Shim Sa each year, giving those 1st Gups who have demonstrated they are at a required standard the opportunity to attend and test for their Black Belt. The Dan test consists of two practical elements. First is the Dan Assessment Day, usually held at the Swinton Centre. If the student is successful, they will be invited to attend the Dan Test at Bury Grammar School, where they will demonstrate everything they have learned on their Tang Soo Do journey and earn that Black Belt. The dates for these events in 2026 are:

  • 19th April (9:00am - 4:00pm) - Dan Assessment Day (Swinton Centre)

  • 17th May (2:00pm - 5:00pm) - Dan Test (Bury Grammar School)

  • 11th October (9:00am - 4:00pm) - Dan Assessment Day (Swinton Centre)

  • 15th November (2:00pm - 5:00pm) - Dan Test (Bury Grammar School)

Five Minute Rule

Can we please take this opportunity to remind you of the ‘5 minute rule’? While all students are expected to be in class, prepared and ready to commence training BEFORE the advertised class start time, we recognise there can be occasional issues with traffic.

However, if a student arrives more than 5 minutes late for the advertised start time of the class, they will not be allowed to join in. This is disruptive and disrespectful to the other students (who all managed to make it on time) and can be dangerous if the warm-up is missed.

Late!
Late!

On time is 5 minutes early for class! Thank you to the 99% - the 1% have been warned!

Online Presence

Many people often forget about all the extra information and tools we have outside of the Do Jang. We have several different places where you can find tools and help regarding your training.

The main areas are our website and social media (both Facebook and Instagram). These have lots, if not all, the relevant information that can help speed along your journey to 1st Dan and beyond! There are terminology and history sheets to help you learn and remember for any upcoming Test or Gradings. We also have a dedicated app that can be accessed through a prompt that appears when visiting our website, as well as a YouTube channel with even more videos to help with any extra practice outside of the Do Jang.

Now don’t think just because you have all these tools and materials available to you that you can skip coming to class if you can’t be bothered! They’re simply there for a visual aid when going through Hyungs or techniques that have already been taught to you by your super Instructor.

Importance of Uniform Trim and Badges

Fully trimmed uniform
Fully trimmed uniform

As part of our uniform, all Leadership students should display their organisation and Federation patches on their uniform. The Organisation Patch (round badge) goes on the left chest, and the Federation Patch (square patch) goes at the top of the left arm. If you have been lucky enough to earn a Referral Patch, this should be placed around the organisation badge. It is very important that all students adhere to the strict uniform code and have their badges on the uniforms. The Green and Red Belt students should also have matching trim around the lapel of their Do Bok once they have been promoted to those ranks.

Should you require any sewing services for any additions or alterations to your uniform, then these are available by contacting:

What to Do with Yourself Over the Festive Break

As we approach the festive break, we thought it worthwhile to list out some resources to help you stay trim and fit, keep progressing, and learn new skills over this period.

Classes Over the Festive Period

There will be some additional classes between Christmas and New Year at the Prestwich Centre on Monday 29th December. Join us for a Tigers ‘Assault Course’ at 5:15pm and a ‘Burn off your Christmas Dinner Class’ at 6:00pm. This is open to Students from all our Centres, and there is no need to book in; just turn up for some much-needed Christmas energy burn.

Keeping Active

The FMAC TV YouTube page has a range of fitness activities for you to undertake, such as Miss Brown's Workout of the Week, Master Nelson's 10 Daily Exercises, or the huge range of pre-recorded classes available.

Stopping Little Ones from Getting Bored

There are enough pre-recorded Tiger Tots classes for you to play one out each day for those Tigers with too much energy. Just search 'Tiger' on the FMAC TV YouTube channel to bring up all the classes. Alternatively, keep them busy for a whole day by playing the whole playlist.

Improving Your Skills

Again, there are masses of pre-recorded classes, plus videos on specific skills - blocks, kicks, self-defences, etc. Have a browse through the FMAC TV YouTube channel or search for what you are after.

Preparing for Dan Assessment & Black Belts Can Get Ahead of the Game

Red Belts can practice their Hol Sin Sool and Hyungs to make sure they're on top of the syllabus. The 1st Dans will be able to get their foot on the first rung of the ladder by learning the basics of Bassai and spending a little bit of the Christmas break getting to grips with the new pattern they will be demonstrating in June.

Alternatively, just relax and take a break. We'll be back in the New Year refreshed and ready to go.

Final Word

2025 has been another year of successes and milestones for North Manchester Family Martial Arts Centres. The four centres have continued to go from strength to strength, with over 750 students now trusting us with their training each week. We also now have a record number of Black Belts and can boast over 50 active Dan students. Additionally, we’ve seen students starting their Tang Soo Do journey hit a record 500 this year. Add to that, students of all ranks earning their next Belt Rank as they continue to their next step Black Belt and beyond. Every single one of us, both Instructor and student, can look back at 2025 and be incredibly proud.

But we as a group don’t plan to sit back on this success. We look to make 2026 even bigger and better!

Onwards & Upwards
Onwards & Upwards

One thing is for sure, if we all approach it with the right mindset and attitude from the 5th of January, it is bound to help every single one of us succeed. It will help to give us all the best foundations to build on for another successful year.

So whatever your New Year’s Resolutions are going to be, make sure martial arts figures highly in them. Set your goals from day one, which will only help you navigate down the path to success. Whether it’s another belt along the route to Black Belt or facing the challenge of actually going to your Black Belt test this year, be positive. Set out your goals from the start and have an idea of the best path to get there. Above all, stick with them. If you had a successful 2025, then look back now and be incredibly proud of yourself. But then turn your attention back to the future and let's make sure that 2026 is going to be our most successful year ever.

From everyone at North Manchester FMAC, we wish you and your families all the very best for this Christmas. We hope you have a very happy and successful New Year.
